Artist Highlight: Emila

Reviewing a piece of music with a deep, personal meaning to the composer can sometimes be challenging. 

Who am I to analyse the work, potentially missing the point entirely and drawing an unintended conclusion? 

Yet, that's exactly what music is—a conversation between artist and listener. What it means to one person doesn't matter as long as something, anything, is felt at all.

Those were my thoughts when listening to Emila’s “Not Yours, Never Was.” The track is directed at one individual, hence the “yours,” so it felt like I was eavesdropping on a private conversation, interrupting something I had no right to listen to. 

During this exchange, Emila lays her cards on the table. Her lyrics express a torn state of mind—she wants to give something a go but knows it may not be the most productive decision.

As she tells the story, the music provides the ideal backdrop. The instrumentation has a haunting quality that feels almost sinister at times. It's as though the darker side of Emila’s decision has possessed the music, taking charge. 

Despite this, the artist keeps within the “rules” of pop music, never straying too far into the unusual to ensure casual listeners remain engaged.

Emila’s “Not Yours, Never Was” is a compelling piece that showcases her ability to blend personal storytelling with hauntingly beautiful music. 

The track’s ability to maintain accessibility while delving into the darker aspects of emotion makes it a standout in the pop genre.
