WILLOW – WILLOW
July 19, 2019 saw the release of “WILLOW,” the new album from Alternative R&B singer- songwriter Willow Smith. The self-proclaimed “Star Child,” daughter of actors Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith, and sister of artist Jaden Smith (the only featured musician on the project), uses this space yet again to express sorrows from a life of growing up in the limelight, through experiments with psychedelic instrumentals. It was her 2010 hit “Whip My Hair” that propelled her into a musical career, with Jay-Z going so far as to sign then 10-year old Willow to his recording label Roc Nation.
The album, Willow’s third to date, showcases a talent akin to that on her previous projects, with versatility that is becoming synonymous of her name. This project was nearly self-produced, in collaboration with Tyler Cole, also a member of art collective MSTSRep. Yes, Willow Smith does have room to grow, but her awareness of that is perhaps what may lead her to elevate herself into the pantheon of modern-day alternative R&B queens.
